Mother Miguel Mountain (aka Rock House) is about 4.5 miles round trip hike in Chula Vista at an elevation of 1,163 ft. with approximately 950 ft. elevation gain. The main attraction of this hike is the American flag at the summit and the panoramic views of San Diego!

There are a few different trails around this popular mountain biking area. We start at the Mother Miguel Mountain Trailhead on the corner of Paseo Veracruz and Paseo los Gatos near Mt San Miguel Park. Take the dirt trail to the crossroads, continue straight, then swing right at the next fork in the road. The area overall is very rocky/dusty and devoid of shade. Wear good hiking shoes! It gets hot here so bring lots of water too.

If you are like me and are a fan of all things rocky and shrubbery, then you are going to have a fun time on this hike! We enjoy exploring the trails on the summit, hunting for bugs, animals, and shade.

Look to the south to see Mexico, and to the west to catch a glimpse of the ocean and Downtown. Take a look east to see the bigger mountains of Cuyamaca Rancho State Park. The monster that is El Capitan (aka El Cajon Mountain) can be seen to the north.

If you are looking for a more visually appealing hike, this one might not be too exciting for you. Instead, focus on testing your mettle on Mother Miguel’s steeper incline. It's a great training hike before tackling some of the bigger hikes in San Diego such as Potato Chip Rock and El Capitan. We love to hike up and run down Mother Miguel Mountain every so often to stay in shape! For a bit more of a challenge, start at the Sweetwater Park Trailhead in Sweetwater Summit Regional Park for a 6.9 mile hike round trip with approximately 1,394 ft elevation gain.

Please note:

Dogs must be leashed at all times.

Some trails are also open to mountain bikers and horseback riders.
