The Peñasquitos Creek Waterfall is a fun area nestled in Los Peñasquitos (translation: little cliffs) Canyon Preserve. We took the PQ Falls Trailhead from Park Village Rd, which is about 2.2 miles roundtrip on a wide, relatively flat dirt road.
This trail is dog and bike friendly. Some parts of Los Peñasquitos are equestrian friendly too! One time we met a horse loving dog who was just thrilled to sniff Brie! Brie on the other hand, not so much haha. I got to pet the horse, though! She was so nice :)
The waterfall typically flows year round, but tends to be roaring in spring time and during the relatively uncommon El Niño and La Niña heavy storm seasons. The rocks are fun to climb (be careful!) with lots of cute shaded picnic spots nearby.
Peñasquitos Creek Waterfall is the main attraction in the canyon, with Carson's Crossing coming in at a close second. El Cuervo Adobe Ruins and Eichar's Grave are tied for third.
The waterfall hike can be made longer and more scenic by starting at the Black Mountain Rd parking lot (parking is $3). It's 6.4 miles round trip from the parking lot to the waterfall. You'll pass by Eichar's Grave and through Carson's Crossing before arriving at the waterfall. Hiking to El Cuervo Adobe Ruins from there would add another 5.8 miles round trip to your journey.
Today was a beautiful day for a hike. We had such fun XD
Please note:
